A Dream of Hope: Inside Bless a Child Foundation

A Dream of Hope: Inside Bless a Child Foundation

The Mbuyu Foundation works in Katanga Slum to bring life, hope and healing to the most vulnerable.

It was started by my husband, Dr Rob Makanda & myself (Leah Makanda), after we both had individual experiences in Katanga and had developed a heart for the people there.

It is difficult to know where to begin.

Should one start with the children, bright-eyed, full of wonder, their laughter echoing through the homes? Children whose smiles are so radiant you would never imagine the battles they are fighting. Or should one start with the families, over 10,000 of them, who have found life within these walls, discovering solace in a place that feels more like home than a shelter.

Perhaps it is best to begin with a dream.

A dream that envisioned “a world where children fighting cancer can access quality cancer care and treatment services.”

This dream was the seed. And over the years, it has blossomed into Bless a Child Foundation, a place that now stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of children in Uganda battling cancer.

Free, Compassionate Care for Families in Crisis

Driven by an unwavering commitment to support childhood cancer patients, we have crafted a network of programs designed not just to heal but to nurture. To us, care is not merely a service; it is a promise. A promise that every child who walks through our doors will find support while they battle cancer. These programs include accommodation, subsidized medical support, transport assistance, Education and play therapy, psychosocial support and counseling.

All these services are provided to the children and their caregivers at no cost.

The care we provide is woven into the very fabric of every BCF care home. (We operate 2 care homes in Kampala, one in Mbarara in western Uganda, and one in Nairobi, Kenya). Each home is more than just a shelter. It’s a safe haven, a place of comfort where the children can come out of their shells and find companionship with others on the same journey. At the BCF care homes, the children become children again as they laugh, play, learn, and most importantly, dream of a better future.

A Home of Hope and Healing

At Bless a Child Foundation, we provide a home away from home for the children and their caregivers. When you walk through our doors, you realize that these homes are not just for healing cancer but for mending hearts. Children find friendship, love, and support. They discover that they are not alone in this battle of life and death.

It is this environment that has changed lives and brought hope where there was once despair. Behind every giggle, every shy smile, and every joyful cheer is a story. Stories of resilience, courage, and the unyielding power of hope. Stories of parents who found the strength to keep going because they weren’t facing the journey alone. Bless a Child Foundation has been a beacon of salvation for over 10,000 families.

But this dream—this beautiful, life-changing dream—would never have come to life without the generosity of people like you. Your support makes it possible for these children to fight cancer surrounded by love. Your kindness turns fear into courage. Your compassion gives hope a home.

As we look to the future, we invite you to be part of this dream. Walk alongside these brave children and their families. Join us as we continue to build a world where no child battles cancer alone.

You can bless a child’s life today by donating or volunteering your time to be with the children. Every little bit counts. Every act of kindness echoes through our homes, filling them with hope.

Because here, at Bless a Child Foundation, hope does not merely visit. Hope lives here.
