Driving in Uganda

Driving in Uganda requires patience, courtesy and extra vigilance. Always carry a valid driving licence, vehicle registration, insurance and identification documents. Drive defensively, obey speed limits, avoid using a mobile phone while driving and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If You Are Involved in an Accident:

  1. Stop immediately and switch on your hazard lights.
  2. Check for injuries and call the emergency services if medical assistance is required.
  3. Do not leave the scene until it is safe to do so.
  4. Contact the Uganda Police and report the accident as soon as possible.
  5. Exchange contact, insurance and vehicle details with the other driver(s) and, where safe, take photographs of the scene.
  6. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible and obtain a Police Abstract Report if required for your claim.

Road Etiquette

  1. Drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  2. Be alert for pedestrians, cyclists, boda bodas and livestock, particularly in rural areas.
  3. Keep a safe following distance and avoid dangerous overtaking.
  4. Use seat belts at all times and ensure children are properly restrained.
  5. Exercise extra caution when driving at night, as road lighting and visibility may be limited.

  • Before setting out on a long journey, ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, your mobile phone is fully charged, and you have emergency contact numbers saved.
  • Allow extra travel time, particularly during peak traffic hours and the rainy season, when road conditions may be more challenging
