Health Uganda

Uganda’s tropical climate means certain health risks exist, but simple precautions can help you stay safe and well.

Uganda is home to a tropical climate where diseases such as malaria, typhoid and other mosquito- and water-borne illnesses can occur. From time to time, the Ministry of Health may also issue public health alerts, including for diseases such as Ebola. Taking simple precautions can significantly reduce your risk of illness.

Staying Healthy in Uganda

  • Take prescribed anti-malaria medication where appropriate and sleep under an insecticide-treated mosquito net.
  • Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and trousers, especially during the evening.
  • Drink bottled, boiled or properly treated water, and practise good food hygiene.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.
  • Keep your routine vaccinations up to date and seek medical advice before travelling or relocating to Uganda.

Helpful Tips

  • Don’t ignore a fever.
  • Malaria is present throughout Uganda and can become serious if left untreated.
  • If you develop a fever, chills or flu-like symptoms, seek medical attention as soon as possible and tell your healthcare provider where you have been travelling.

Health Alert

Uganda has well-established public health systems to respond to disease outbreaks. If the Ministry of Health issues guidance during an outbreak, such as Ebola, follow the official advice, practise good hand hygiene, avoid contact with anyone who is unwell, and seek medical attention if you develop symptoms
