Work Permits & Residence

Foreign nationals intending to work or reside in Uganda must obtain the appropriate work permit or residence permit before commencing employment. Applications are submitted online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) and are generally sponsored by the employing organisation. Alien Identity Cards

 

All foreign nationals living, working or residing in Uganda are required to register with NIRA and obtain an Alien Identity Card. The card is valid for the duration of your work permit or Certificate of Residence and should be carried with you at all times, as you may be asked to present it by the authorities.

Helpful Tips

  • Apply early. If you are a foreign national living or working in Uganda, don’t wait until your permit is close to expiring before applying for your Alien Identity Card.
  • Use official channels. Always obtain forms, book appointments and check application requirements through NIRA’s official website or by contacting the NIRA Call Centre.
  • Track your application. NIRA provides an online service that allows applicants to check the status of their application using their reference number.
