Driving in Uganda

Whenever you drive in Uganda you must have a valid driving license and you must obey the rules of the road at all times

– This is for your safety and the safety of others too. The speed limits are: 50km/h for urban areas, 100km/h on rural or paved roads and 80km/h on gravel roads.

LICENSES

  1. A learner’s license is a requirement for a new driver license and is given for three months.
  2. Renew your driving license after paying the appropriate fee.
  3. Apply for a Full Driving License after completing training from a licensed driving school and with a stamp from the IOV.
  4. Apply for a duplicate license after reporting the loss of the original to the Police.
  5. Exchange your non-Ugandan driving license for a Ugandan license.
  6. Check if you qualify for a class extension and the requirements if you do.

Exchange a Foreign driving license: 5 Years 330,000 | 3 Years 230,000 | 1 Year 135,000

Lost or misplaced your license: 121,000

Pay for a learner license, new driving license, a renewal, class extension, duplication or a foreign exchange. Go to the UDLS website to find out the steps for generating a PRN on the URA website and MOWT e-services website

Previously, we required applicants who were replacing lost licenses to advertise the loss in a national newspaper. The requirement has been scrapped” All you need is

a) Police letter

b) Pay for a replacement of a renewal

c) National ID

UDLS does not issue International Driving Licenses – for these you need to contact the Automobile Association Uganda
