Driving in Uganda

Whenever you drive in Uganda you must have a valid driving license and you must obey the rules of the road at all times – this is for your safety and the safety of others too.

RULES OF THE ROAD

  1. Do not speed. Stick to the speed limits.
  2. Do not use your cell phone while driving.
  3. Do not drive without wearing a seat belt.
  4. Ensure you have Third Party insurance and ensure your car is licensed.
  5. Do not drink alcohol and drive.
  6. Do not drive recklessly.
  7. Children must be safe: Children under 5 years must sit in the back and use a child restraint
  8. Children aged 5–12 must wear a seat belt in the back
  9. When driving, be aware of pedestrians, livestock, children, boda bodas and bicycles on the roads. Uganda’s roads are busy and can be chaotic at times.

Application for a learner driving license: 3 Months 60,000

Application for a full driving license: 5 Years 330,000 | 3 Years 230,000 | 1 Year 135,000

Renewal of license: 5 Years 310,000 | 3 Years 210,000 | 1 Year 130,000

Exchange a Foreign driving license: 5 Years 330,000 | 3 Years 230,000 | 1 Year 135,000

Lost or misplaced your license: 121,000

Pay for a learner license, new driving license, a renewal, class extension, duplication or a foreign exchange. Go to the UDLS website to find out the steps for generating a PRN on the URA website and MOWT e-services website

All you need is:

a) Police letter

b) Pay for a replacement of a renewal

c) National ID

UDLS does not issue International Driving Licenses – for these you need to contact the AA (Automobile Association Uganda)
